Amalie Joachim-Schneeweiß, Amalie Schneeweiss, Weiss, was a contralto who had made herself a name as Amalie Weiss. Her dramatic voice took her to the stages of England and the United States. She worked as alto for the opera in Hanover when she met the violinist Joseph Joachim (1831-1907) at the home of Julius Stockhausen. They were engaged on 13-02-1863 and they married on 10-06-1863.
She gave up her career for the marriage and they had six children. But the constant jealousy of Joachim wrecked the marriage and a divorce followed in 1882. After Joachim’s friend Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) sheltered her for her husband the two men fell out with each other and it was took several years before their friendship was restored.
