Natalie Bauer-Lechner (1858-1921) and Justine (Ernestine) Rose-Mahler (1868-1938) had already taken a small house for the summer in the City of Kitzbuhel, Tirol, about 800 metres above sea level.

Justine (Ernestine) Rose-Mahler (1868-1938)Emma Marie Eleanor Rose-Mahler (1875-1933) and Elise, the cook, left on 11-06-1897, and Gustav Mahler joined them three days later. Villa Hochenegg was ‘the most attractive yet of all our summer places’. The view was superb and the climate excellent.

Gustav Mahler wrote Rosa Papier-Paumgartner (1858-1932) about it: ‘We live entirely cut off from the world. Our little house is so isolated and peaceful on the edge of the forest, and surrounded by meadows. etc. ‘

They bathe in the nearby Schwarzsee.
