One of the prime aims of Mahler Foundation is to extend thinking about the composer beyond the merely musical in order to embrace the larger issues he grappled with and to ask how his legacy has relevance today.

This endeavor stands as a central pillar of the Mahler Forum for Music and Society, based in Klagenfurt, Austria. This edition of The Mahler Hour takes a closer look at this organization and especially at 2023’s annual event.

Co-founder, professor of fine arts, and curator, Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein, explains the aspirations behind the Forum and what makes this merging of music, the arts, philosophy, and science such a unique event.

We also hear more about 2023’s program entitled: The Power of Wonder – Astonishment as a Driving Force for Community Building and get a glimpse at how Mahler, neuroscience, Beethoven, and the theremin can be brought together in order to provoke new thinking about the issues of today.

One key element every year is the artistic expression of young people. We hear from the composer Ingi Kim and the writer Sarah Rinderer in a discussion of their collaboration in producing a work commissioned by the Forum – a composition entitled Ode to… that will be premiered right after the livestream. Alja Klemenc explains the challenges of conducting an ensemble in producing a performance of music that is being played for the very first time.

Watch now and join us for an interdisciplinary look at Mahler and our time.
