Chmelná is a village in the Central Bohemian region, and is part of the district Benesov. Chmelná has 125 people. The ancestors of Gustav Mahler lived on both sides of the river Sázava. The surname “Mahler” is seen for the first time in the conscription of Jews in the year 1793. According to this conscription Abraham Mahler (1720-1800) was singer in the synagogue and earned his living as a kosher butcher here.

Gustav’s grandfather Simon Mahler (1793-1865) was born in Chmelná. After his marriage with Marie Mahler-Bondy (1801-1883) he went to Lipnice near Havlickuv Brod.
