Every May we shift the normal Saturday timeslot of The Mahler Hour to commemorate Mahler’s passing on May 18, 1911.

On may 2022 we marked the anniversary with a special show dedicated to the finales of some of the symphonies, not only as symbols of conclusion but also as demonstrations of the various ways the composer approached the question of finality.

Lew Smoley hosts a tour of the music, ranging from triumph to innocence, from annihilation to dissolution, with ample time for immersion in the music and contemplation of Mahler’s vision.

Before that an interview with Lawrence F. Bernstein introduces us to his new book: Inside Mahler’s Second Symphony. A Listener’s Guide (Oxford University Press).
